Choose where member and VIP discounts apply

Members of a VIP tier or a paid membership with a discount perk get it automatically at checkout. These settings decide which items that discount may touch, and whether it adds up with the discounts you run yourself.

Two kinds of item never get a member or VIP discount, whatever you set below:

  • Membership products. A member doesn’t get their member discount on buying or renewing the membership itself.
  • Gift cards. A discounted gift card would be free money.

A minimum order value on a member discount counts only the items it can discount, so a membership fee or a gift card in the cart doesn’t help reach it.

  1. Go to Settings → Eligibility and find Member and VIP discounts.
  2. Choose what to leave out:
    • Don’t discount items already on sale: items sold below their compare-at price get no member or VIP discount. The rest of the cart is still discounted.
    • Don’t discount subscription products: items bought on a subscription plan get no member or VIP discount, so it doesn’t add to the subscription savings.
    • Collections without member discounts: click Pick collections and choose the collections to leave out.
    • Product tags without member discounts: type tags such as wholesale or no-discount, separated by commas, and add them. Products with any of these tags get no member or VIP discount.
  3. Decide whether the discount stacks. Combine with other discounts is on by default: the member discount adds up with your own order and product discounts. Turn it off and Shopify applies whichever discount is better for the customer, never both.
  4. Click Save.

The change reaches checkout within a few minutes. Every setting is off by default, apart from combining, so a store that never opens this card keeps its checkout as it was.

The same settings are member_discounts on PATCH /program/eligibility, so an assistant connected through Set up in chat can change them too.
